The Impact of Aerosols on Satellite Radiance Data Assimilation Using NCEP Global Data Assimilation System

نویسندگان

چکیده

Aerosol radiative effects have been studied extensively by climate and weather research communities. However, aerosol impacts on radiance in the context of data assimilation (DA) received little attention. In this study, we investigated satellite radiances incorporating time-varying three-dimensional distributions into observation operator. A series DA experiments was conducted for August 2017. We assessed simulated brightness temperatures (BTs), bias correction quality control (QC) algorithms assimilated infrared sensors, analyzed temperature fields. found that taking aerosols account reduces BT thermal window channels (8 to 13 μm) up 4 K over dust-dominant regions. The cooler BTs result more positive first-guess departures, produce negative biases, alter QC checks about 20%/40% total/assimilated observations at wavelength 10.39 μm. As a result, assimilating aerosol-affected produces warmer lower atmosphere sea surface which better agreement with measurements trans-Atlantic region.

Assimilation of SSM/I radiances in the NCEP global data assimilation system

A technique for the assimilation of Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction’s (NCEP’s) global data assimilation and forecast system is described. Because the radiative transfer (RT) model used here does not yet allow for cloud/rain effects, it is crucial to properly identify and exclude (or correct) cloud/rain-contaminated radiances usin...

NCEP NOTES Assimilation of Tropical Cyclone Advisory Minimum Sea Level Pressure in the NCEP Global Data Assimilation System

The assimilation of official advisory minimum sea level pressure observations has been developed and tested in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) to address forecaster concerns regarding some tropical systems being far too weak in operational Global Forecast System (GFS) analyses. The assimilation of these observations has been operat...

Impacts of Argo salinity in NCEP Global Ocean Data Assimilation System: The tropical Indian Ocean

[1] Salinity profiles collected by the International Argo Project (International Argo Project data are available at http://argo.jcommops.org) since 2000 provide us an unprecedented opportunity to study impacts of salinity data on the quality of ocean analysis, which has been hampered by a lack of salinity observations historically. The operational Global Ocean Data Assimilation System (GODAS) d...

GSI 3DVar-Based Ensemble–Variational Hybrid Data Assimilation for NCEP Global Forecast System: Single-Resolution Experiments

An ensemble Kalman filter–variational hybrid data assimilation system based on the gridpoint statistical interpolation (GSI) three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVar) system was developed. The performance of the system was investigated using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Forecast System model. Experiments covered a 6-week Northern Hemisphere winte...

On the assimilation of total-ozone satellite data

A two-dimensional model for advection and data assimilation of total-ozone data has been developed. The Assimilation Model KNMI (AMK) is a global model describing the transport of the column amounts of ozone, by a wind field at a single pressure level, assuming that total ozone behaves as a passive tracer. In this study, ozone column amounts measured by the TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (T...
